Bicycle parking is imperative in order to improve and encourage bicycle travel in urban areas. However, bicycle parking and bicycle storage are of serious concern. Especially for those who live in high density settings such as apartment complexes, college dormitories etc. the issue of where to leave a bicycle while at home is a pressing concern. With the number of bicycle thefts recorded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the recent years averaging nearly 450,000, safety is a primary concern. Although secure bicycle parking is not fool proof against theft, it is a definite deterrent from the thieves’ point of view. Secure bicycle storage and parking also provides reassurance to the bicyclist to leave his bicycle unattended while he attends to his work.
Bicycle storage is provided in a variety of settings, the three basic approaches being:
- Bicycle Racks (preferred bicycle storage method): These open air devices, to which a bicycle can be locked, are useful for short-term parking and a great bicycle storage method.
- Bicycle Lockers (secondary bicycle storage): These come in handy at sites that require long-term bicycle storage for a variety of users. They are stand-alone enclosures designed to hold one bicycle per unit which could be considered a very secure bicycle storage method.
- Bicycle Lock-Ups (a third method of bicycle storage): This is a site-built system with secure enclosures that can hold one or more bicycles for bicycle storage. These lock-ups are ideal for long-term bicycle storage for a limited number of regular and trustworthy users.
Bicycle storage equipment provides means for retaining the front wheel of a bicycle in an elevated position and means for supporting the rear wheel below the front wheel, in which the rear wheel support means comprises a support surface spaced from the ground and ramp wheel access means to the support surface.
