BICYCLE STORAGE ROOM POLICY

In most educational institutions in the U.S., the facility of using the bicycle room for bicycle storage is free of charge to faculty, staff and graduate students. The presence of bicycles in places other than on the racks of the bicycle room provided for bicycle storage are considered a hindrance. However, certain policies have been put in place and strictly enforced to ensure the efficient operation of the bicycle room for bicycle storage:

- All bicycles in the bicycle room for bicycle storage should be hung vertically in the racks. Bicycles stored on the floor or leaned against a wall on the bicycle storage area would be removed without informing the owner

- Overnight storage of Bicycles in the Bicycle room for bicycle storage is not accepted and Bicycles that are found stored in the Bicycle room continuously for 2 nights in a row without use, will be promptly removed. Students/ staff who have their Bicycles so removed from the bicycle storage facility more than once in a semester, would be asked to return their key to the Bicycle room used for bicycle storage

The following requirements should also be fulfilled by users of Bicycle storage rooms in colleges:

- Cyclists should, at all times, carry a lock with them in case the racks of the bicycle storage facility are full and they would be required to use racks located outside for bicycle storage

- Since no thefts take place inside a Bicycle room, one should refrain from locking the Bicycle if it is inside the Bicycle room for bicycle storage. This makes it difficult to shift Bicycles in bicycle storage when necessary

- In order to reduce the problem of improper use of the Bicycle room intended for bicycle storage, legitimate users are required to label their Bicycles with a login or their name before bicycle storage. In instances where issues arise regarding the Bicycle or the use of the Bicycle, the owner could be contacted prior to removing the Bicycle from the bicycle storage area. The label should be put in an easily visible place such as the top of the handlebar or tube before bicycle storage

- In order to make slots available both in the upper racks as well as the lower racks at all times for bicycle storage, cyclists are requested to distribute Bicycles across the upper and lower racks whenever possible. This way slots on both levels for bicycle storage remain open for parkers with special needs

Policies mentioned above for bicycle storage have been developed owing to the abuses of the Bicycle room that have taken place in colleges. These simple, yet reasonable policies for bicycle storage are formulated with the expectation that the Bicycle room users would police themselves. Room users are reminded that the use of a Bicycle room for bicycle storage is a privilege and not a right and that space in the room, being scarce, must be shared responsibly.
